#2 PsychOlympics ~ The Event

sorry if you think i took too long.yea sorry for you,not me.HAHA.

so after registration..the participants were ushered into the Psych lab

Ee Lin..giving her welcoming speech

and er..Cassie explaining to the participants about the games..and after the whistle was blown at 9.30 a.m. the participants were allowed to go to the stations to play games and collect points!

King Kong's favourite..taken care of by Li Qiun and Wan Ting..the real name of this game is actually the Tower of Hanoi..(get it King Kong's fav?)

participants have to answer General Knowledge questions correctly before they could make a move of one of the pieces..to transfer them from one end of the pole to the other..

Cubical Letters..whch actually comprises of Boggle and Snake and Ladder..taken care of by Minyi,Kelvin,Jasmine and Hui Wen..the Snake and Ladder map was done by Minyi and Su Woan

participants would have to get a word from boggle,before rolling the dice to play snake and ladder.

Enter the Labyrinth's real name is Labyrinths :P i thought the name itself was cool enough..this station was taken care of by Mei Yan and Sii Ying..

participants would have to control a small metal ball..and try to get it to the end without falling into any holes..

Tangle Untangle..taken care by Chen See and Kit Yee..it was situated in the Cold Room to add an extra twist to the game itself

sure no problem ah?participants have to try to tangle and untangle stuff to gain points.

Wordplay...taken care by Ee Lin and Jia Wen

participants would have to come up with 3,4,5 and 6 letter words from the word "Psychology".can you see School in there?HAHA.

Pirates of Selat Melaka..i love this name the most *heart* so it's actually Battleship..station taken care by Yong Long and Yong Xiang.

i'm sure everyone knows how Battleship works right?*wink* sink the station crews' ships and you get your points!

one of my favourite station!It rhymes with bamboo..haha yup Taboo!station was taken care by Jacq,Gim Soon and Pamela.

Had your gingko?Gingko is actually good for your memory..hence,the name.and the real name of this game is actually called "Rotating Memory Game" this station was taken care by Felix and Poh Yee.

participants would have to find pairs that are alike to get points.but here's the catch.the board is constantly rotated.

Eye of the Taurus, taken care by Cindy and Michelle is actually called Bull's Eyes

all you have to do is take the metal ball and throw it into those holes..and see how much you score..according to the feedback form,this is one of the participants' favourite station!

and finally, the challenge of the rising sun.the floating station,by Suet Ling and Su Woan.why floating?well,it's not always you get to catch the sun rise right *wink*

ok seriously.we cheated.The creator of Sudoku is actually an American architect.and not Japanese.HAHA.

the participants were given till 12pm to complete the stations..teams coming in later than 12 would be penalized.All teams who have finished the stations were to search for the Game Master, Yng Jiun and to report to her.

and hehe of course our favourite blueberry tarts.mmmm.refreshments were served after the race.and before the prize giving session.

which means in the next post,you'll see pics of the winners :)

*credits: all the games were planned by our Game Master, Yng Jiun and her team which comprises of Chen See, Jacq,Minyi and Su Woan (floating station was her idea!) and all teaser names were made up by Cassie and Suet Ling.

do not attack me.i would bring you news of PsychOlympics as soon ~~as possible~~ as my assignments and other responsiblities allow me to do so.*peace unto you* so i've decided to blog them in different phases cause oh well,it's better this way :) it gets you coming back for more *wink*

so as planned,on Saturday, 25th April 2009, all systems went well.the PsychOlympics took place.the design of the logo is done by Lim Yong Long,the Publicity guy for this event.

Registration begins at 9am at the cafeteria. Participants were coming in on time :) they registered themselves and got their stickers which has their name and team name on it. and now i'm going to present you all the PsychOlympians who took part in this yr's PsychOlympics.

Theme Days are BACK!

hello wassup guess who's back?!

The long awaited Psychology Theme Days are back!!! With more new and exciting themes, be a part of this event every Thursday, 1030.am on...

9/4 - Disney Character Day
16/4 - Soft Toy Day
23/4 - Traditional Day
30/4 - Uniform Day
7/5 - Pyjamas Day

The rules are simple...just dress/abide according to the theme! Then, gather at foyer for a group photo session.

But wait! Here's the thing, it shall be a competition amongst the batches. The competition uses a point system, 1st placing gaining 3 stars , 2nd 2 stars & 3rd -1 star.

Your team will be judged based on the following:
 Pose
 Efficiency & Punctuality (at organizing team to take picture)
 Creativity and Originality

Thus, the size of your batch doesn't matter. Gain the most points by the end of the event and Win the GRAND prize!

So don't forget your dates and we'll meet again in our battle gears!

PsychOlympics 2009

this would be the Department of Psychology's Second PsychOlympics.wasn't there when the first happen,could only rely on pics and past secretary reports and the words of others to build this one up.but i assure you it's gonna be amazing.because the team of people who are working on this are really working on it.

Come in a team of four, it matters not whether you are a psychology student or non-psychology student, just come in a team of four, be it classmates, friends or even siblings, and compete with other teams in this race. A race that would put your mind to the test. (and patience too!) Go from stations to stations, playing games and puzzles, have fun and win the race while you're at it!The first three teams would be rewarded and everyone who participate would get a certificate of participation.

For a price of RM4, you get to play fun games and challenging puzzles with your friends for a few hours, probably make new friends, receive a certificate OR win prizes and refreshments are served.

Details are on the poster above. To secure a place in the race, call the numbers on the poster to register yourself. so do you have what it takes to be a PsychOlympian?

hello happy holidays.i'm sorry that the pictures took so long to come by.Let's have a look at them,shall we?

what is a Christmas Masquerade dinner without a mask? and of course, a Christmas Tree!

Prof Tom Omerod who was visiting from Lancaster University was a good sport too in wearing his mask!

The Opening Performance ~ Christmas songs by Batch 6

then scrumptious dinner was served..a wide spread buffet of Chinese and Western with delicious dessert..moving on it was a Fashion Show by Batch 7 on many different ways to wear a scarf and i must say,we have some models in the making :P

Suet Ling then entertained us with some songs on the gu zheng.

then it was the well-syncrhonized hand dance by Batch 8

we even spare time for a game of Bingo which the VIP table won.

Jocelyn of the graduating batch surprised her peers with a song performance. She sang Vitamin C's Graduation and had her classmates up on stage with her.

next up was Prize giving ceremony where Dr Teoh presented gifts to the graduating batch, Sook Yee,Poh Wan and Joanne representing Karen, with Dr Teoh.

the VIP table, some lecturers were unable to join us due to unforeseen circumstances. we hope that next year more lecturers, if not all, would be able to attend the dinner.

all in all,it was a great night of fun and yummy food. The people were awesome and everything went well. I'm sure everyone who came had fun, right? For those who missed it, oh well,fret not,for there is always next year.

#4- Change of Venue!

hello Happy Valentine's Day..i'm currently blogging this while sipping red wine with my loved one.

i'm here to tell you that the venue for the psychology dinner has been change...instead of being all the way in Concorde Shah Alam..it would now be in Sheraton Subang Hotel. (Melati 6,7)

Sheraton Subang Hotel is a hotel situated near Holiday Villa and the Sime Darby Medical Centre, previously known as Subang Jaya Medical Centre. ok just google map or ask around =)

every other details from the date,day,time and dress code which is formal attire (and do come with masks!) remains the same.

and here's wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day, a truckload of assignments and ample time for revision for the exams that would be approaching in 3 weeks time?awesomeeeee i'm a mood killer.

i present you...*drum roll*..the official poster for our Annual Psychology Dinner 2009!nice?=)

this is gonna be a quick update..and like i've said,you would hear it here first when there's update abt the dinner.

as you can see from the poster above the date of the dinner have been changed to a Saturday which is on the 7th of March and due to request and much consideration *cough cough*, the early bird closing date has been extended till 9th of December 2008 =)

the last day of exams for that short sem would be on the 5th of March..so you have ample time after that to get your dress,get your mask and look all fine for the dinner!

remember to pay up to your class rep by the 9th of December!

and like i promised that i'll update you from time to time about the 2009 dinner...here's the latest update.The venue has been confirmed!

It would be at Concorde Hotel Shah Alam

on the 5th of March 2009

which is on a Thursday

dinner starts at 7.00pm

(mark that date down on your calendar!)

and it's open to all..which means you can bring your friends =)

and the theme has been voted in..majority has chosen to have A Christmas Masquerade Ball..which i think is fair..and mayb even square..cause we're having the best of both themes.and fear not,you do not have to come in the traditional green,red or white just cause it's "christmas"..Christmas is just for the decor and the atmosphere..then again,you can wear those colours..in fact,come in any colours you want!just remember to come masked.

oh hi welcome back.and yesss that is the menu for the dinner and as my boss puts it.."we have every (edible) poultry on land" and all for a price of RM100. what?RM100 so expensive?well just between you and me,if you pay up before the 18th of november 2008,you only have to pay Rm85!!which means..

That Body Language Workshop

did you go for that body language workshop?ohhh dude it was awesome mannn..

hence the title,here are the pictures from the workshop that happened on the 23rd of October at the Psych Lab

a total of 30 over participants turned up..i think it was almost 40..oh well all i know was the psych lab was packed haha

everyone was given an expression to potray and the many expressions are actually the different groups for the workshop..there were excited,disgusted,shocked..just to name a few..and you're suppose to introduce yourself and then do the expression so you'll know who and who is in the same group..it's a good way for the participants to know one another..made any new frens?

after many rounds of shaking around..

i guess disgusted found themselves *shrug*

and erm..posing or doing expression?

started off the workshop with Yong Long and Su Woan presenting on the introduction..from the definition to the many poses and facial expression that we do and the meaning behind each pose and facial expression...

then a real life example to show the participants how important body language is...that's two volunteers who were playing the interviewer role..while Sii Ying was the lack of confidence job candidate..she avoided eye contact,was hesitant in her answers and was fidgeting a lot..

while Yng Jiun was the second job candidate..who was the total opposite of the first..and no prize for guessing which candidate would directors in the real world actually hire..see how important body language is?

the next session was on Non-verbal communication between friends and between teacher and students..covered by Jacqueline

she had helpers Chen See and Yng Jiun acting out poses for the participants to guess

anyone remember what pose is this?HAHA

then it was games time WOOHOO

everyone has to get into their own groups

and each participants has to act out a certain expression or event for their group members to guess..

next up is Non-Verbal Communication in Different Culture presented by Joanne..she showed how different sign language like the famous "peace sign" and others can mean different things in different culture or different country.

then the last session was Non-verbal communication between male and female presented by Cassie. She covered on how different body language can mean different things to both gender and gave some tips on how to spot out potential partners,or recognize body language that says "i am interested in you"

why so serious?o.O or are they being defensive?hmmmm...

we realize we still have time for one more game..

everyone were to get into their respective groups again

but this time..it's the pass the message game..but instead of whispering it,they would act it out..then the last person would have to guess it correctly to get points for their group..oh yess there are points accumulated for every game ~~sadly i can't remember who the winner was~~

then it was time to wrap up the workshop..Ee Lin did a summary and the workshop ended.

Academin Symposium 2008

i am stealing assignment time Y.Y that is the life of a university student.assignments assignments assignments.most of you know that last Saturday on the October of 11th, the Psychology Department had an Academic Symposium.This is the second Symposium and i felt that this time round, it was more packed?resourceful?useful?relevant?awesome?ok awesome then.

it started off with registrations and the arrival of guests of honor and participants.

from the other side..after the talk,we had our first tea break..and poster presentation..then talks again where paprticipants get to choose which paper they would want to listen to..there's like 6 choices of paper in the first round of talks..then we had lunch and poster presentation again..then we had another round of talks with 5 choices of paper..then we had tea break again and poster presentation..and then it was the closing talk. One of the speaker, Maziar,a third year student..presenting his research on handedness
after every presentation..there's a 5-10 minutes of Q&A session

and Ms Cheung presented too on the impact of parental relationship in predicting depression in youth

then Dr Teoh gave a presentation on a comparison of how headache and non-headache sufferers measure mental health problems
CRZ,2nd year student also had a chance in presenting..his was on the effectiveness on imagery,controlled breathing, and combination of both methods in reducing biofeedback reading..
and Ms Grace, one of the lecturers, presented a research that discussed the influence of self esteem and locus of control on a person's body shape dissatisfaction

and yes this symposium covered many grounds in terms of research paper..ranging from Children,Health,Youth,Social and Human Resource and Cognition and Perception =)

Action Speaks Louder Than Words

yea i know it's sem break now and everyone's busy having nothing to do with uni work and stuff but here's a good news for you and i need your help to spread it all around.anything free is good right?hmmph not if it's FREE and BENEFICIAL!

Okay you probably can't see the details on the poster...but you can help me help you by clicking on the picture yourself and it would all be big and clear hehe.Then again,if you're lazy to click (err..) i shall enlighten you with the details. There would be a workshop "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" hence the title of this post on the 23rd of October, 2008 which falls on a Thursday. The two hour workshop would be from 3.30p.m to 5.30 p.m and it would be held in the Psychology Lab.

The purpose of this workshop is to help you better your understanding on body language and to be aware of the different types of communication that can take place without the use of words.(again,hence the title) Body language is important because often we tend to send out information about ourselves that we are not aware of to others. It is important to understand our body language well in order to send out the right signals.

The awesome thing is..it's FREE registration *bounce bounce bounce* so spread the word around and do contact Yong Long (012-6410812) and Yie Chu (012-8763690) to register!

Part 1- Let the games begin..

On the 30th of Sept, we had a lil gathering and the many ppl turned up at 5pm and was gathered in the psych lab for a round of fun games..weeeee

the first game we played was "Stick is and Guess it"..students were spilt into their respective batches
and then stick notes with labels were stick on their forehead and they are to guess what is written on the sticky note
weee everyone has a sticky on their forehead and each label falls into categories like subjects,vehicles,fruits,colours,professions and animals
how then would they be able to guess?
they are to go around asking others only ONE question..and that question has to ba a yes or no question
but firstly they must introduce themselves weee
asking with hand gestures
later when they have finally found out what's on their forehead..they would go to their respective categories

even Ms Elaine,one of the lecturer played along =)
then the categories are joined and then spilted into two big groups..Joyce explain the next game which is "Tie or Die"
where two ties would be passed around in the group..where one tie would be tied one knot and remove..while the other would be tied two knots and be untied before passing it on to the next person
the other group..rushing againts time..if both the ties land on one person,that person would be punished
and that person is none other than Ms Grace haha and she drag Gim Soon,one of the students to be punished along with her...dancing to Mamma Mia hehe

before we found the next group of ppl to be punished
introducing themselves while the others discuss and decide on how to punish them
while Yong Long and Wan Ting escaped by singing a song each..the rest have to do the Mississipi with their butts..as suggested by Dr Priya

moving on to the next game...don't they look like refugees?haha
Ms Cheong looking so cheeky over here...now both the groups would face off in the next game called "Who Am I?" or better known as the blanket game
or tablecloth hmm..each group were to send someone to the "battleground" where when the blanket is pulled off,they must quickly shout out their opponent's name..the one who cannot remember the opponent's name or is slow in responding would then join the opponent's group..which mean the group with the most ppl would win the game

Hello if you're here and you're wondering where are the pics for the Social Gathering..then i say to you,come back next week -_-" cause it takes time to upload the pics up but i ensure you that you would not be disappointed when you come by next week (still pls remember to vote for the dinner's theme cause the voting ends this friday)

We had an early birthday surprise for Ms Jeannie..we lit up the cake and some candles in the psych lab..and students and lecturers duck under the tables to prepare for the big surprise haha

#1- Annual Dinner 2009

you look at the title and you wonder am i being serious or what.yes we areeee serious.the committee of the upcoming Annual Dinner in March 2009 has already been set up and started work.We are 6 months ahead of time and our aim is to bring you the best dinner we can =) i would constantly update you on the progress of the planning of the dinner and so this first piece of news is to decide on a theme for the dinner *wink wink*

okay ppl this pic is for illustration purposes only..we do not have enough ppl to fit a full grand ballroom but fret not,the committee is trying.and as for now,the venue is unconfirmed,which means the price is still unconfirmed.though no harm to start saving?
The first choice of theme would be Christmas in March..Christmas brings about the magical and fairytale atmosphere and we thought it'll be a great idea to relive the Christmas moments in March hehe
the hall would be decorated with Christmas decors..and you would think we're still in December 2008 (so weird blogging this cause it's still Sept 2008 -_-") and yes there would be a Christmas Tree =p
the second choice would be "A Masquerade Ball" oooo yes the mystery..we just thought it'll be fun to dress up and pretend we don't know each other HAHA
the third choice is a combination of both..why sacrifice one for the other? A Christmas Masquerade ball. Imagine being all dressed up with an elegant looking mask, walking right into a hall filled with Christmas decors =)

So wait no more,cast your votes and only do it once pls. and hoho if you guys didn't vote and when the theme is fixed and you're unhappy about it,i would call your name on stage and make you do the cha cha.that is if i know who you are.so vote now!

Last Christmas,This Raya

Have you heard of the upcoming social gathering?okay if you have not,it's alright..cause still not too late..but if you have confirm your attendance to the gathering,here are the details for you..but FIRST,i would like to show you some pics that i took from last celebrative gathering,namely the Christmas party last year (hence the title *wink wink*)..this is for the old to reminicize on the pics and the new to have a peek on how did the gathering went..

the psych lab was decorated nicely..
and yes..it snowed a lil too =p
the table was covered with many dishes of food..as you can see in the pic above Ms Jeannie is taking on the yummy delicious curry chicken!
there were games and also time to chit chat,get to know each other and mingle around while enjoying the food
and there was even a Christmas treee and presents underneath it...we had a gift exchange too!

now fast forward to September 2008

and so this Raya we decided to have a gathering too...not only as a pre-celebration for Raya,but also to get to know one another better (berbonding session) esp the juniors of batch 9!we would start off with some ice breakers and fun games at the Psych Department at 5pm and then later on move to a restaurant to buka puasa and have dinner!It's a restaurant called the Summer BBQ and Steamboat Restaurant at Mentari Court area (this is opposite Pyramid for those who are unsure)....and yes it would be a buffet of steamboat and BBQ food for a price of only RM15!!!(note: the food is halal) how cool and awesome is that.sorry if you don't share my passion for food =p and if you didn't notice from the Christmas pictures ~~where's your observation skills!~~..the theme was red and white..so for this gathering,it would be yellow and green!=D you can come in green or yellow or yellow AND green..be a good sport k?=p

but but pls don't think this gathering is gonna be awkard and boring,even if it is (NOLA OF COURSE NOT),remember that you who would be attending it are a bunch of crazy happy funny ppl right right right =p i think it would be a great time of fun..and FOOD =) and pls don't worry abt transportation if you do not drive,because we would be able to carpool our way there..it's not a problem and and and you don't have to worry about not knowing the directions because we'll all be leaving together from uni and all you have to do is follow the car in front of you =)

the lecturers would be there and students from other batches would be there...don't you want to see how your lecturers act outside of uni?(ok i hope they don't read this blog =/) and and why is it important to know your seniors..cause you would know who to find when you need help with assignments or if you have questions abt studies..and and why is it important to know your juniors?~~think conveniant sampling subjects!~~ erm..new friends with unpredicatable personality =D i think it's important to know one another cause ermm we are from the same department -_-"

okay i know the new commitee of Sunway Psychology Club has been elected few week back..and i'm sorry for the delay of posting up something though the blog URL has been publicized to all of you down at the department's notice board...but then ppl have assignments and due dates to meet one ma..so i shall try as best as i can to keep this blog updated =)

so have you guys seen this two poster up at the psych department's notice board?

i shall introduce them to you one by one..so you can see for yourself how they look like to make it easy for you to identify them if there's a need to.

Psychology Theme Days

All students of Psychology can join in the fun by participating in our Theme Days! This semester, theme days are on Tuesdays. Photos will be taken in the foyer every Tuesdays at 1.30 in the p.m. Plan ahead what you're gonna wear and be the winners of the "Best Dressed" of the week!

The THREE most outstanding dressed person will have an individual photo taken and this will be put on the notice board in our very own Psyc Department.

Our honourary judges are none other than: Ms. Jeannie Lam, Ms. Grace Yap & Ms. Elaine Yong.

Welcome!

Sunway Psychology Club was created in 2005 for all Psychology students to participate in extra-curricular activities that involves both psychological aspects and non psychological aspects of activities.

Among the activities that we have had in the past are:

1. Psycho-Olympics, whereby Psyc students challenges other students of Sun-U in various games.
2. Going to numerous outlets of McDonalds in the Klang Valley in large groups but buying only one item per time.
3. Having our at-least-once-per-semester dinner and play time with everyone in the Psychology Department.
4. Christmas celebrations (Yes, even during semester breaks).
5. Mental Health Exhibitions.
6. Graduation Dinner.

Today, Psychology Club is open to all students of Sunway University College so that everyone can indirectly learn about Psychology while having fun.
